8. Banty’s Roost (Caledon, ON)
Price: $60
If there’s one course on this list strictly for vibes, it’s the Roost. That said, course conditions have improved significantly in recent years.

Gone are the days of crabapple-covered fairways and pebbles littering the greens.
The layout is attractive for sprayers off the tee, as you can play into greens from adjacent fairways when you banana slice.

While the fairways may not be Augusta-esque, Banty’s is a solid, laid-back time and the price is right. Plus, where else can you find a tee time in early March or late November!?
7. Humber Valley (Toronto, ON)
Price: $62
Drivable greens. Giant trees. Back to back stunning par 5’s. Warbirds a-swirling. What doesn’t Humber offer?
Picture walking in your favourite park, where you know the trails like the back of your hand. Where no matter the situation, nothing could go wrong.

Humber embodies a sense of contentment, as errant drives are usually found and you’re only one good shot away from a green in regulation.
With the exception of the culinary offerings in the clubhouse, the occasional concrete fairway, and rogue marshals, Humber is a phenomenal neighbourhood course catering to hackers of all skills levels.
6. Lakeview (Mississauga, ON)
Price: $74
Two things come to mind whenever Lakeview is brought up: spectacular, butter soft greens and impossible-to-get tee times.
Nothing beats a summer twilight round at the Mississauga-based course, with the breeze off Lake Ontario and eclectic cast of characters who you always seemed get paired with.

When you can manage to finagle a tee time, Lakeview offers a relaxing 18 with the best municipal greens in the game. It’s a full-length track replete with tree-lined, wide open fairways.
As long as you can avoid getting your ride dented by tee shots off #10 and #18, Lakeview is a highly recommended track.
5. Tam O’ Shanter (Toronto, ON)
Price: $62
In the vein of Humber Valley, the Tam is a friendly City-run course with splendid views of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The par 5 alongside Kennedy Rd offers a famous tee shot, which could hook left into a windshield, slice onto another green, or carve the centre of the fairway.
With lush fairways and the occasional beach-like bunker, the Tam is a step up in quality from Humber Valley (and even Don Valley depending on the day).

As a bonus, the course is located just a hop, skip and a jump from Foody Mart, a perfect locale for cheap post-round grub.
4. Glen Eagle (Bolton, ON)
Price: $79
Located about 45 minutes from the city, Glen Eagle is a hilly track with picturesque views. It sports the best practice chipping green in the nation, hands down.
The large, lightning-quick greens are fun to (three) putt on, and the approach shots to elevated greens bring out the best in your wedge game.

One downside of Glen Eagle is the price: it’s about $115 after taxes when riding. If you’re prepared to walk the course (bit of a trek), the juice is worth the squeeze.
3. Ballantrae (Stouffville, ON)
Price: $93
Luscious fairways, superbly designed holes, cashmere greens. Ballantrae checks all the boxes for a perfect course.

With water hazards, blustery winds, and speedy greens, the course can be a monster.
And then there’s the bunkers. On the one hand, they’re deep and tough to escape. On the other hand, they’re so silky soft that you almost want the challenge of getting up and down.

One thing is for sure – even if you fail to break 100, Ballantrae will leave you scrambling to book another tee time.
2. Don Valley (Toronto, ON)
Price: $75
Located right in the city, Don Valley is a gem of a course. Lush trees, beautiful holes (#1 and #12 come to mind), wildlife, and historic vibes make it the best municipal course, ever.

Best experienced in the morning, the course is short-ish but still challenging. It’s a course you can shoot a career-best or go through a box of balls.
Other than the sometimes curmudgeonly clubhouse staff, Don Valley is a premier destination to book a round.
1. Pheasant Run (Sharon, ON)
Price: $95
We’ve reached the top of the list! It was agonizing choosing between Pheasant and Don Valley for #1. Pheasant narrowly takes the top spot, with its perfect blend of superb golf, chill staff, and good food.

Pheasant is known for tight fairways, and more than a couple lost balls (lest you bring a hot driver to the course).
The undulating greens demand a precise flat-stick, though they roll smooth and true.

With three beautiful 9-hole offerings, and an Augusta-like stretch on Southern Uplands, Pheasant takes the cake for golf experience in the GTA.
Great photos. I’m in the mood to golf even though it’s freezing outside.
